Percentages – Grade 7
Distinguish percentage amount, whole and rate: calculate via 1%, understand discounts and check results. Create a free worksheet or try an online test.
🎯 What you will learn
- ✓Identify whole, amount and rate
- ✓Distinguish discount from final price
💡 How it works
Percent means “out of a hundred”. 25% = 25/100 = 1/4. The whole is the base amount and equals 100%.
How it works
💡 Percentage amount = whole × rate ÷ 100. Identify the unknown quantity first.
For 15% of €80, find 1% first: 80 ÷ 100 = €0.80. Then multiply by 15. For a discount, this is the amount removed; subtract it from the original price to find the final price.
If the whole is unknown, work back through 1%. If 18 children are 30% of a group, 1% is 18 ÷ 30 = 0.6 and 100% is 60. To find a rate, divide the part by the whole and multiply by 100: 12 out of 48 is 25%.

✍️ Worked examples
Worked examples 1
€80 with a 15% discount: new price?
- 1.1% of €80 = €0.80.
- 2.Discount: 15 × €0.80 = €12.
- 3.New price: 80 − 12 = €68. That is 85%.
✓ 68 €
Worked examples 2
18 children are 30%: how large is the group?
- 1.30% corresponds to 18 children.
- 2.1%: 18 ÷ 30 = 0.6. 100%: 0.6 × 100 = 60.
- 3.Check: 60 × 30 ÷ 100 = 18.
✓ 60 children
⚠️ Common mistakes
- • Giving the discount as the final price: €12 off means paying €68 here.
- • Changing the base: 20% of 50 is not the same as 20% of 80.
